If you have saved custom instructions in Gemini as Gems — a 'write my weekly report' Gem, a 'match my writing style' Gem, a 'always give three perspectives' Gem — those will soon change shape. Google is replacing Gems with a new feature called Skills, and it says your Gems will be migrated automatically when the switch happens.

The official Google blog announced Skills are rolling out globally in Gemini chat, and multiple outlets (Android Authority, Notebookcheck) report that personal accounts' Gems will automatically become Skills on November 17. Workspace accounts follow later: March 2027 for business, enterprise and nonprofit, June 2027 for education.

What changes

  • Skills are called with a slash: type '/' and the skill's name in the prompt bar to run it.
  • You can stack multiple skills at once — e.g. a writing-style skill plus a brand-guidelines skill — and attach reference files (plain text, PDFs, images).
  • Gemini can even build skills from your chats and run them automatically when a matching prompt appears.
  • Gems migrate automatically when they go away: you do not have to rebuild or copy anything manually.

Timeline

  • Personal accounts: Gems removed and migrated starting November 2026 (reported as November 17).
  • Workspace business / enterprise / nonprofit: March 2027.
  • Workspace education: June 2027.
  • Gems by Google Labs: turned down in November — these do NOT migrate into skills. The Opal mini-app experiment is also turned down in November.

What you should do now

  • Nothing to migrate manually — Google handles the conversion when Gems go away.
  • If you rely on specific Gems, spend a few minutes before mid-November checking that your most-used ones still behave the same as Skills after the switch.
  • Start practicing the slash command: create a simple Skill and call it with '/' so the new habit is ready before Gems disappear.
  • Keep important custom instructions in a note as a safety copy; skills get more features (sharing, Google Drive files, Notebooks) in the coming weeks.

After November 17

This is a placeholder guide published ahead of the migration. We will update this article on and after November 17 with a step-by-step walkthrough of the migrated Skills experience, including how to verify your old Gems survived the switch.

Bottom line

Your Gems are becoming Skills on Google's schedule — automatic, no manual copy-paste needed. The real change is how you use them: slash commands, stacked skills and reference files. Test the new flow before November 17 so the transition is invisible to your workflow.
