If you think every good AI assistant comes from Silicon Valley, it’s time to look again. A family in France uses Mistral’s Le Chat for homework help in French; a student in Shanghai asks Kimi to read a 200-page PDF in seconds; a shop owner in Seoul drafts customer replies with CLOVA X. Great AI is built all over the world now — often cheaper, sometimes better at your language and your problems. Here’s who you should know.

Europe: Mistral (France)

Mistral is France’s AI champion — open-weight models plus a polished consumer app called Le Chat. It’s especially strong with European languages and matters like privacy-friendly answers. If you want a ChatGPT alternative made in Europe, or you work with French, German or Spanish content daily, start here.

China: six tools worth knowing

  • DeepSeek — the budget hero. Astonishingly cheap and open, it shocked the world with near-frontier reasoning at a fraction of the cost. Great for long reasoning tasks on a tight budget.
  • Kimi (Moonshot) — the long-document king. Paste a 200-page report and ask questions; it reads giant contexts effortlessly. Ideal for students and researchers.
  • Doubao (ByteDance) — the all-rounder with a huge free tier, deeply integrated into everyday apps, with fast voice and image features. A great free daily assistant.
  • Qwen (Alibaba) — strong open models and a capable app; excellent Chinese and multilingual skills, popular with developers.
  • Ernie Bot (Baidu) — solid general assistant deeply tied to Baidu search and Chinese knowledge; dependable for daily Q&A in Chinese.
  • MiniMax Hailuo — an AI video star that turns a sentence into a cinematic clip, often free enough for hobbyists (more in our Kling/Jimeng/Hailuo guide).

Korea: CLOVA X (Naver)

Naver’s CLOVA X is the Korean-language AI assistant, bundled into Naver’s search and shopping. If you live in Korea, run a business targeting Korean customers, or simply want an AI that understands Korean culture and slang natively, it’s the natural pick.

Who should switch?

Stick with US tools (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini) for general English work — they’re still the most capable overall. But add a non-US tool when: your language isn’t English (Mistral, CLOVA X, the Chinese apps), you want lower cost or open weights (DeepSeek, Qwen, Mistral), or you need to read enormous documents (Kimi). Best of all, most of these have free tiers — it costs nothing to try them side by side.
